Here is a list of books for first word learners. These books have the same words repeated many times helping you to practice again and again.

My Dad. A clever Anthony Browne book with lots of detail in the pages. Can be enjoyed by babies and preschoolers alike. Lots of good opportunities to say ‘Dad’ and to describe Dad ‘big dad’.

Daddy, can you play with me? A great one for young toddlers. On every page, baby hippo is looking for his dad to play with. Daddy hippo is under a flap. Babies can lift the flap and say ‘daddy’ or even an action ‘daddy reading’.

Daddy loves me. A simple book of photos of dads with babies. A nice easy approach for first words learners.

The Baby goes Beep! A delightful book with simple illustrations of a baby doing noisy things.

Baby Says Peekaboo! A photo book with a baby on each page to find under a large flap.

In My Nest. This book has a felt bird in the middle of a cut-out book.

That’s not my Puppy. This touch and feel book has a puppy on every page with a different texture. You can say ‘puppy’ or ‘dog’ on each page or shake head and say ‘no’.

That’s not my kitten. An adorable touch and feel book about cats/kittens.

No No Yes Yes. A contrasting book of good vs not good behaviour. What is the baby up to now?! Your toddler can chime in ‘no’ and ‘yes’ on every page!

A Potty for Me! Another cute Karen Katz book about potty training. A lift the flap book for babies and toddlers learning about the toilet.
For those first words – poopoo, weewee, nappy and potty.
On my Potty. A very simple board book of line drawings. Leslie Patricelli books are very clear with little distraction.

Bathtime. This photo quality board book for babies has touch and feel pieces. Great way to reinforce the word ‘bath’ or ‘bubbles’ many times.

Bathtime Peekaboo! Large flaps to lift suitable for babies. Lots of bathtime words to talk about and textures to feel.

Words to Try – bye bye! (with waving action.)
Goodnight Moon! Why not use this book as ‘bye bye’ instead of Good night? On each page ‘bye bye’ can be said to all the toys as it is bedtime.
