This is our recommended list of Books about the Beach/Ocean for toddlers and preschoolers.  These books  have a high level of repetition and good choice of vocabulary.

Look and Say Beach – simple, large clear pictures in a tabbed book.

 Words to Try – shell, ball, dig, sand.

hooray for fishHooray for Fish!   – A colourful book with lots of descriptive words to learn.  Twin fish, thin fish, fin fish.  You can use it for 2 word phrases or you can use it to learn new vocabulary.

Words to Try – twin fish, thin fish, spotty fish.

commotion in oceanCommotion in the Ocean is another very colourful book about lots of different sea creatures.  Each page has a picture and information about a different sea creature.  The rhyming pattern is also toddler friendly.

Words to Try – shark, whale, octopus, crab.

maisy beachMaisy at the Beach.  The whole Maisy series creates lots of opportunity for learning common vocabulary and little sequences.  It is just the right level for 2-3 year olds.

at the beachAt the Beach is a simple story for an older toddler.  Great for learning new words like shell, seagull etc for younger children.

 Words to Try – shell, seagull, boat, bucket.

flip flap oceanFlip Flap Ocean is a cute book cut in half!  Each page has a sea creature. Lots of silly animals can be created by turning only half of the page.  1/2 crab and 1/2 octopus – children love making these up!

Words to Try – crab, octopus, fish, jellyfish.

octopus socktopusOctopus Socktopus has lots of rhyming fun for younger children.  Toddler interest can also be kept with the flaps and pages to pull.

Grandpa and Thomas grandpa thomasseries have wonderful rhyming patterns for children to listen to. The phrase  Swishy swashy goes through the whole book and is an easy one for toddlers to say independently as you read the story.

9781782445470Lastly we like to mention the magnetic scene books.  These can be used again and again and are great for reinforcing new words.  Little stories can also be made up with the magnets.  Under the Sea or At the Beach are both great fun.
